Holiday Shopping Frenzy on Social Media Money Talks!

Holiday shopping weekend sees widespread discussion of TVs, PlayStation 5, and Airpods on social media, according to a new report.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, holiday shopping took over social media with a whopping 2.3 million posts discussing holiday shopping, Black Friday, or Cyber Monday. A thorough analysis by Sprout Social of X, YouTube, Reddit, and Tumblr revealed that almost half of those posts (48%) expressed a positive sentiment towards the shopping extravaganza.

The rest of the social media users were split between the 18% who had negative opinions and the 32% who remained indifferent. Interestingly, the top items that Black Friday shoppers discussed on social media were televisions, PS5s, Airpods, iPhones, and Xbox.

According to the findings, consumers are increasingly turning to social media for holiday shopping inspiration based on Sprout Social's report. A Shopify and Gallup survey announced in October revealed that an impressive 48% of Gen Z shoppers plan to buy some of their gifts via social media. Interestingly, a similar trend is seen among all U.S. consumers, with a third (33%) planning to do the same.

Another report by JLL, released the same month, showed that 35.8% of shoppers intended to use Facebook for gift inspiration, followed closely by Instagram (32.7%), YouTube (24.1%), TikTok (23.4%), and Pinterest (16.2%).

The JLL report further revealed a generational divide inshoppers' preferred social media platforms for holiday gift inspiration. Shoppers aged 18 to 29 were more likely to rely on Instagram (46.5%) and TikTok (38.5%), while millennials and Gen Xers leaned towards Facebook and Instagram for gift ideas.

Shoppers are not only using social media to voice their opinions about holiday shopping and search for gifts but are also taking advantage of their mobile devices for shopping this year. An Adobe Analytics report predicts that 51.2% of online shopping will occur via mobile devices, making it the first time mobile shopping surpasses desktop buying. The report also noted that mobile devices accounted for $5.3 billion worth of Black Friday transactions, representing a 10.4% increase from the previous year.
