Huawei Pura 80 Ultra: Preliminary Glance at the highest-end smartphone of 2025

The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, a new addition to the global market, is making waves with its impressive photography and video recording capabilities. This device boasts a unique zoom system and a large primary sensor that sets it apart from its competitors.

The level of smoothness and detail in the videos recorded by the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is very high. It can record 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, offering excellent quality even at 10x zoom. The quality of the shots might have been affected by the fact that the platform is behind glass, but the dual-lens system, enhanced by optical image stabilization and a variable aperture, ensures high image quality and dynamic range.

The Pura 80 Ultra's unique zoom system, which uses two lenses mounted on a single 50MP 1/1.28-inch sensor, performs excellently in real-world photography. It features a switchable dual telephoto camera design combining a medium telephoto 3.7x (83mm) and a super telephoto 9.4x (200mm) lens on the same sensor. This allows seamless optical zoom switching without loss of clarity, covering a broad focal range from about 13mm to 212mm, before digital zoom or cropping.

In real use, the phone maintains excellent texture quality even at 10x zoom, with only a slight, non-dramatic drop in detail and a subtle waxy texture. Huawei states the camera achieves an industry-record 16 stops of dynamic range with its advanced HDR technology, delivering impressive detail in both bright and dark parts of scenes.

The hardware includes a sophisticated dual-prism, four-lens-group design with a micron-level motor to switch between the two lenses. This mechanism increases the effective optical path length inside the phone by 129% compared to traditional periscope zoom systems, enabling superior zoom performance in a compact form factor.

The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra also includes an ultra-wide lens suitable for architectural photography. The camera block of the Pura 80 Ultra stands out with its unique construction, recognizable from the previous Pura series.

The Pura 80 Ultra was tested in real-world conditions, with all shots taken in the most user-friendly mode: point and shoot, no second takes. It was also tested in challenging conditions, such as a dimly lit contemporary art museum with bright installations, where it performed admirably.

The device lacks built-in Google services, but these can be easily resolved using Huawei's AppGallery and tools like microG or GBox. The Belarusian prices for the Pura 80 Ultra have not yet been announced, but worldwide prices in our region are around €1500.
