Hub-and-Spoke Logistics Can Slash Urban Emissions by 45%

A study by the Technical University of Brunswick has revealed significant benefits of implementing 'hub-and-spoke' logistics concepts. These strategies can notably reduce emissions and traffic congestion in urban areas.

The research project, 'ZAUF', funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) with over 1.5 million euros, explored the optimization of logistics with these concepts. Factors such as vehicle and location selection, and order consolidation were found to significantly impact their success.

The study found that 'hub-and-spoke' concepts can reduce driven kilometers by up to 45% and increase vehicle utilization by up to 30%. These Logitech concepts, which involve light commercial vehicles, light trucks, or medium-heavy trucks, can also reduce daily CO emissions by up to 32% in urban factory deliveries. A proprietary program for order consolidation was developed to optimize vehicle loading and reduce trips.

The 'ZAUF' project, which ran from August 2019 to January 2021, demonstrated the potential of 'hub-and-spoke' logistics in improving urban mobility. By reducing emissions and traffic congestion, these Logitech concepts can contribute to more sustainable and efficient urban deliveries.
