California is taking significant strides in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly from buildings, as highlighted by Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis who stated that buildings account for an estimated 25% of emissions statewide. To address this issue, the US Department of Energy has pledged to provide $8 billion to fund regional clean hydrogen hubs, as called for in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

One of the key players in this transition is Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas). They have already taken the lead in demonstrating the potential of clean hydrogen technology with projects like the Innovation Experience in Downey, California. Toyota opened this demonstration house on January 31, 2023, showcasing a hydrogen-powered home that uses clean energy like solar and green hydrogen to significantly reduce emissions.

The Innovation Experience is not just a single home. It is a SoCalGas project that includes a microgrid system capable of powering a neighbourhood and supporting at least 100 homes. Moreover, SoCalGas is working with Bloom Energy to blend hydrogen into the heating system at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

SoCalGas's efforts extend beyond the residential sector. Sunline Transit in Palm Springs operates its buses on hydrogen supplied by SoCalGas, demonstrating the potential of clean hydrogen in the transportation industry.

California is expected to be one of the H2Hubs, with SoCalGas developing the first-of-its-kind project called Angeles Link. This project aims to supply hydrogen to various industries, including power plants, heavy-duty manufacturing, transportation fueling stations, and energy storage. Angeles Link is poised to play a crucial role in the state's transition towards a more sustainable future.

The $8 billion will be spent over the next five years to support the development of multiple H2Hubs across the country. This investment will not only help California but also other regions in their transition to clean hydrogen technology, contributing to a greener and more sustainable nation.
