ICANN Launches New Tool to Simplify WHOIS Data Requests
ICANN has launched the Registration Data Request Service (RDRS), a new tool aiming to simplify requests for redacted WHOIS data. While participation is voluntary, all registrars are encouraged to join. However, the RDRS doesn't guarantee access to all requested data and can't be used for country-code top-level domains (CCTLDs).
The RDRS was introduced in November 2023, following ICANN's instruction in May 2018 to redact personal data from WHOIS records due to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It serves as a one-stop shop for submitting registration data requests to participating registrars.
The new service comes amidst the implementation of the Network and Information Security Directive (NIS2). This directive requires registrars to maintain accurate WHOIS records and respond to data requests within 24 hours for various online issues.
While ICANN encourages all registrars to join the RDRS, participation remains voluntary. The service doesn't guarantee access to all requested data and isn't applicable to CCTLDs. It's designed to streamline data requests, aligning with the requirements of NIS2.
