Disregarding the competition from China, it's clear as day that German car manufacturers are the kings of the electric vehicle (EV) realm in Germany. For the first four months of the year, none have reigned higher than Volkswagen, having sold a whopping 35,000+ EVs according to data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority. BMW with 14,000, VW's subsidiary Skoda with 13,500, and Mercedes trailing behind with just 10,000, have all followed suit [ntv.de, rts].

Almost one out of every five new cars from Volkswagen, BMW, or subsidiaries are now battery-powered and the company is showing no signs of slowing down, while Mercedes seems to be losing momentum [ntv.de, rts]. German cars have been dominating the German market for years, and it seems the EV segment is no exception. Meanwhile, Chinese competitors like BYD and MG are lagging far behind, with BYD being able to quadruple its sales to nearly 2,000 cars, and MG losing ground with only 3,200 electric vehicles sold [ntv.de, rts].

However, due to higher import duties on electric vehicles from China, which have been in place since summer 2024 in the European Union, Chinese manufacturers may be looking to establish bases within Europe to make their cars more accessible to the market. BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu has suggested a potential European center could be set up in Hungary [ntv.de, rts].

VW's edge: Strong Domestic Presence

  1. Brand Muscle: Volkswagen has a long-standing reputation for reliability and trust, built over years with German consumers. This loyalty has played a significant role in their current dominance in the EV market.
  2. Domestic Superiority: German brands have held a strong position in the German automotive market. As electric vehicles become more common, many consumers still prefer to go with what they know.

Advanced product lineup

  1. Volkswagen ID Series: Volkswagen's ID series, like the ID.7, ID.4, and ID.5, provides a wide range of EVs for various consumer needs. Models from the ID series have been leading in sales.
  2. Innovation and Evolution: Volkswagen has continually introduced new technologies, updating its models to keep up with the ever-changing EV landscape, helping to attract new customers.

The struggling competition

  1. Tesla's Trials: Once a major player in the German EV market, Tesla has experienced a downturn due to factors such as an aging model lineup and consumer discontent with some leadership actions.
  2. Chinese Brands' Reach: While Chinese brands like BYD and MG are gaining ground globally, they have yet to establish a significant presence in the German market. Existing brand loyalty and a strong domestic car industry may be contributing to this lack of penetration.

A recovering German EV industry

  1. Bouncing Back: The German EV market is recovering from past government incentive cuts, which caused a slowdown. Volkswagen's strong brand and product lineup have enabled them to capitalize on this recovery, as customers return to purchasing EVs without relying solely on subsidies.
  2. In light of Volkswagen's success in the EV market, the German community is currently evaluating the need for a policy update to support vocational training programs for individuals in the automotive industry, particularly focusing on electric vehicle manufacturing and technology.
  3. German financial institutions are actively seeking partnerships with automotive companies like Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes in funding initiatives for the development of energy-efficient infrastructure, such as charging stations and battery production facilities, to support the growth of the domestic EV market.
  4. As part of its expansion plans, Volkswagen is considering implementing vocational training programs in the fields of transportation and technology to equip its workforce with the necessary skills to innovate and stay competitive in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle industry.
