Installed electric vehicle batteries in China during July: CATL holds a 41.40% share, BYD accounts for 21.18%
China's EV Battery Market Trends in July 2025
The China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA) recently released data on China's power battery installation volume in July, revealing some interesting trends in the country's EV battery market.
In the LFP battery market, CATL, BYD, and CALB had the highest shipment volumes in July, with market shares of 34.54%, 26.34%, and 8.15%, respectively. The production of LFP batteries increased significantly, with a 50.5% year-on-year growth in July. However, there was a 5.3% decrease in LFP battery installation volume month-on-month.
In contrast, the production of ternary batteries in July was 29.5 GWh, up 26.4% year-on-year and 0.1% month-on-month. CATL, CALB, and Svolt Energy were the top three manufacturers of ternary batteries in July, with market shares of 69.59%, 9.43%, and 8.96%, respectively. CALB's market share increased from 7.55% in June to 8.40% in July, with a battery installation volume of 4.69 GWh.
The overall volume of battery installations in China increased by 34.3% year-on-year in July, though it was down 4.0% from June. China exported 14.8 GWh of power batteries in July, with ternary batteries accounting for 8.4 GWh and LFP batteries accounting for 6.2 GWh. This indicates a continued focus on exporting both types of batteries, reflecting the global demand for EV batteries.
In terms of market share, CATL remained the top supplier globally, with a market share of 37.9% in H1 2025, while BYD was second with a 17.8% share. However, within China, both CATL and BYD experienced slight decreases in market share during July. CATL's market share decreased from 43.67% in June to 41.40% in July, while BYD's market share decreased from 21.47% in June to 21.18% in July.
Despite these slight decreases, China's EV battery market continues to be dominated by CATL and BYD, with significant growth in LFP battery production and a notable presence in global exports. However, the market share of leading players experienced slight fluctuations within China, indicating a competitive and dynamic market.
