IonQ Acquires Vector Atomic for $390M, Boosting Quantum Portfolio
IonQ, a leading player in the quantum computing sector, has bolstered its portfolio with the acquisition of Vector Atomic, a top-tier quantum sensing company. The deal, valued at approximately $390 million, was finalised in mid-September 2025.
This acquisition aligns with IonQ's strategy to build a comprehensive quantum ecosystem. It follows earlier moves including the acquisitions of Oxford Ionics, Capella Space, Lightsynq Technologies, Qubitekk, and securing a majority stake in ID Quantique.
Vector Atomic's intellectual property portfolio, comprising 29 pending and issued patents, will strengthen IonQ's offerings. The company's technology delivers ultra-precise picosecond timing, capable of enhancing GPS accuracy by 1,000 times. This, along with precision atomic clocks, inertial sensors, and synchronization hardware, will expand IonQ's existing quantum computing and networking stack.
The acquisition also reinforces IonQ's government-focused initiatives and accelerates its path towards scalable, real-world quantum advantage. Dr. Jamil Abo-Shaeer, CEO and Co-founder of Vector Atomic, will continue his work on quantum sensing technology at IonQ. Over 75 employees, including world-class scientists and engineers, will join IonQ as part of the deal.
The acquisition of Vector Atomic by IonQ brings together two leaders in their respective quantum fields, further solidifying IonQ's position in the sector. With this addition, IonQ's portfolio now includes precision atomic clocks, inertial sensors, and synchronization hardware, expanding its capabilities and potential applications.
