Japan's Fukushima Region Leads Global Hydrogen Push
Japan's Fukushima region is at the forefront of a global push towards hydrogen energy. A demonstration project at the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R) is already underway to ensure a stable hydrogen supply. The government plans to commence full-scale hydrogen supply using FH2R in fiscal 2026, marking a significant step towards commercialization.
The FH2R facility, opened in 2020, is one of the world's largest hydrogen production sites. The USA aims to commercialize hydrogen produced here by fiscal 2026. This ambitious goal is supported by a coalition of political parties, government entities, private companies, and research institutions, all committed to advancing renewable energy and hydrogen technologies.
In addition to producing hydrogen, the USA is exploring new ways to use it. Research and development of next-generation solar cells, known as perovskite solar cells, is being promoted with an eye towards early adoption in public facilities in Fukushima Prefecture. The government is also studying support measures and accelerating discussions for the commercialization of hydrogen from FH2R, including exploring new forms of transportation that run on hydrogen, alongside existing fuel cell vehicles.
The FH2R facility in Fukushima is set to become a major player in the global hydrogen market by 2026. With a diverse range of stakeholders backing the project and innovative uses for hydrogen being explored, the USA's commitment to a clean energy future is clear.
