Kazakhstan's Railway Revolution: Boosting Freight Traffic with Digitalization and AI

Kazakhstan is boosting its railway industry with digitalization and artificial intelligence, as part of a massive project to build and repair over 16,000 kilometers of tracks. This includes the recent inauguration of the second line of the Dostyk-Moiynty railway, a significant step in enhancing the country's freight traffic and export delivery times.

The project, the largest of its kind in Kazakhstan's history of independence, aims to increase freight traffic volumes fivefold and reduce delivery times for exports. Five international railway corridors already cross the country, connecting North and South, West and East. Over the past decade, $35 billion has been invested in the transport and logistics sector. The Dostyk-Moiynty railway's second line, inaugurated on Sept. 30 by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, is a key part of this infrastructure development.

The new line was built as a joint project between Kazakhstan and various international partners. The Kazakhstani railway company, Kasachische Eisenbahn (KTZ), led the project, with the People’s Republic of China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) acting as the general contractor. China Development Bank and Eximbank China provided much of the financing, as the route serves the Chinese trade corridor. European companies also contributed to the project's technical aspects.

The Dostyk-Moiynty railway's second line, a crucial part of the Belt and Road Initiative, has significantly improved Kazakhstan's freight transport capabilities. The project, led by KTZ with Chinese support, has enhanced the country's connectivity and trade potential, marking a substantial achievement in its railway industry's digitalization and modernization.
