Waymo and Hyundai Partner to Expand Autonomous Fleet with Ioniq 5 SUVs
Waymo, the self-driving technology company, and Hyundai Motor Group have announced a multi-year partnership to integrate Waymo's sixth-generation autonomous technology into Hyundai's Ioniq 5 SUV. This collaboration aims to significantly expand Waymo's autonomous ride-hailing fleet in the coming years.
The partnership was announced in October 2024, with testing of the Waymo Driver-equipped Ioniq 5 vehicles expected to begin by late 2025. Deployment and availability of these vehicles in the Waymo One fleet will expand progressively to scale with Waymo's market growth goals.
The sixth-generation Waymo Driver features improved sensors, computing power, and enhanced autonomous capabilities suitable for complex urban and freeway driving. Hyundai's production capacity for the Ioniq 5 models is significant, with updated variants supporting scalability. This new integration follows Waymo’s shift from Jaguar I-Pace vehicles to Hyundai Ioniq 5s for expanding its autonomous fleet.
Meanwhile, Helm.ai's VidGen-2 simulation technology offers a scalability advantage over traditional non-AI simulators. VidGen-2 creates a wide range of scenarios, including highway and urban driving, multiple vehicle types, pedestrians, cyclists, intersections, turns, weather conditions, and lighting variations. This technology learns and reproduces human-like driving behaviors, simulating the motions of the ego-vehicle and surrounding agents in accordance with traffic rules.
In a separate development, Beep Inc. launched C.A.B., an autonomous shuttle service at Mississippi State University. The C.A.B. is scheduled to operate daily from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. and is available to all students, faculty, and guests of MSU for transit.
In other news, Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation announced the upcoming release of the ISX038 CMOS image sensor for automotive cameras, the industry's first product that can simultaneously process and output RAW and YUV images.
However, Cruise, a self-driving technology company, was ordered to pay $1.5 million by the US Department of Transportation for not filing correct reports after a pedestrian was hit by a Cruise autonomous vehicle.
Finally, Ford is lowering the BlueCruise annual and monthly plan pricing for all U.S. customers with Ford BlueCruise-equipped vehicles, and Ford customers can choose to upgrade to a one-time purchase option without needing to activate BlueCruise again on their vehicle.
