Latest Innovation for 2025: Smith & Wesson's Shield X Handgun
New Smith & Wesson M&P Shield X: A Combination of Power and Precision
Smith & Wesson has unveiled its latest addition to the M&P Shield family – the Shield X. This new pistol, introduced in 2025, is a blend of features from the Shield Plus and the Bodyguard 2.0 series, offering a unique balance of power and precision.
The Shield X is a locked-breech, semi-automatic pistol chambered for the 9 mm Luger cartridge. It boasts a 3.6-inch barrel, making it half an inch longer than the Shield Plus, providing improved accuracy and muzzle control. The extra length also allows for an accessory rail on the polymer frame's dustcover.
One of the standout features of the Shield X is its optics-readiness. It uses a Shield RMSC footprint and Smith & Wesson's Clear Sight Cut to divert gas away from the chamber, ensuring a clear sight picture through the optic. This feature is a first for the Shield series, setting the Shield X apart from its predecessors.
To address the minimal purchase on its slides, the Shield X features more aggressive front and rear slide serrations, providing a better grip for easy handling and manipulation.
The Shield X comes with 13-round flush-fit magazines and a 15-round extended magazine, offering versatility in ammunition capacity. The pistol's overall length is approximately 6.87 inches.
In terms of ergonomics, the Shield X incorporates improvements from the Bodyguard 2.0, featuring a longer grip frame, undercut triggerguard, and extended frame beavertail for a more comfortable and secure grip.
Smith & Wesson's internal design and engineering team developed the Shield X, combining elements from the Shield Plus and Bodyguard 2.0 series to create this innovative handgun.
The Shield X is available in three configurations: without a thumb safety, with a thumb safety, and a compliant version with a thumb safety that ships with 10-round magazines. All three versions have an MSRP of $599.
The Shield X's sights consist of an Ameriglo front night sight and a U-notch rear with a serrated face, ensuring clear target acquisition in various lighting conditions.
The M&P Shield was first released by Smith & Wesson in 2012, and the Shield X is the latest update in this popular micro-compact handgun series. With its new features and improvements, the Shield X is set to make a significant impact in the competitive niche it occupies.
