Embrace the evolution of the iconic Jeep Cherokee, set to return this year as a hybrid powerhouse. Although we've seen numerous iterations, the specifics - like stats and specs - haven't been revealed yet. But, based on the limited photos Jeep has released, it's safe to say this new model is going to be boxy and bold, harkening back to the classic XJ's glory days.
Here's a sneak peek of the upcoming Cherokee from Jeep's recent teaser video. Although it shares some design elements with the discontinued 2023 Cherokee, it's clear that the new model is taller and longer than its predecessor. To give you an idea, the XJ Cherokee was around 167.5 inches long with a height of 64 inches, while the last-gen KL Cherokee was approximately 182.9 inches long and 67.8 inches tall in Trailhawk form. Moreover, the KL's wheelbase was about six inches longer than the XJ's at 107.1 inches.
The coming Cherokee appears larger in almost every dimension. While it's hard to tell from the video if the wheelbase significantly increases, its overall length looks significantly greater. The roof is also noticeably taller. Although I won't attempt to guess the new model's exact dimensions, I assume when the official specs are released later this year, the size gap between the new Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee will be drastically reduced.
While it's no surprise that the new Cherokee is larger, given the trend of new car bloat, this growth may diminish the Cherokee's appeal as a compact SUV. However, I don't anticipate this will be a problem for most customers, especially those in America where bigger often equals better.
