Lego's Game Boy Model Recaptures 1989's Magic, Offering 1:1 Scale and a Lens-based Display to Simulate Game Action

The LEGO Group has announced the release of a new set that will transport gamers back to the 1980s. The LEGO Game Boy set, set to hit stores on October 1, 2025, offers a near-life-size replica of the original Nintendo handheld console.

This set, consisting of 421 pieces, will be available for pre-order starting July 24, 2025. It will be sold through LEGO stores, LEGO.com, and select global retailers.

One of the standout features of the LEGO Game Boy set is its use of printed tiles instead of stickers for labels and details. This could be a welcome advantage for those who struggle with stickers in their LEGO builds.

The set boasts an impressive 1:1 scale, measuring 5.5" tall and 3.5" wide. It includes three lenticular screens in total, each cartridge featuring a screen that displays animated scenes when the viewing angle is shifted.

The set also includes brick-built cartridges and a link cable port cover, capturing iconic design details such as the D-pad, A/B buttons, and the Game Pak slot. To add to the authenticity, the set features pressable buttons and functional dials for volume and contrast.

For retro gamers, the LEGO Game Boy set offers a nostalgic trip back to the era of classic Nintendo games. It comes with cartridges for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Super Mario Land.

This is LEGO's second foray into Nintendo console replicas, following the interactive Nintendo Entertainment System released five years ago. The affordable price tag of $60 makes it a more accessible option compared to past retro gaming sets with price tags of $200+.

Prior to the release of the LEGO Game Boy set, LEGO had released sets based on Atari and Pac-Man. The original Game Boy wasn't the most technologically advanced handheld on the market, but it had superior battery life and build quality compared to its competitors.

This new set from LEGO is sure to excite retro gamers who have been eagerly awaiting another LEGO set based on a Nintendo console since the release of the interactive Nintendo Entertainment System.
