Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis joins SoCalGas in unveiling the novel H2 Hydrogen Innovation Experience, a one-of-a-kind demonstration.
In a groundbreaking development, Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis and SoCalGas CEO Scott Drury unveiled the [H2] Innovation Experience ([H2]IE), North America's first-of-its-kind clean, renewable hydrogen microgrid and home. The project, located at the SoCalGas Energy Resource Center in Downey, California, is a testament to California's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
The [H2]IE, powered by a state-of-the-art microgrid, produces clean, renewable hydrogen made from solar electricity on-site. This hydrogen is then used in the home's appliances, such as the water heater, clothes dryer, stove, fireplace, and BBQ grill, marking a significant step towards carbon-free living.
The project has garnered support from various sectors. James T. Slevin, president of Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO, praised the [H2]IE for its use of world-class energy infrastructure and the opportunities it presents for union members. Aaron Stockwell, international representative with the United Association, reiterated California's need for labour to meet its climate change goals, expressing their readiness to contribute.
The Los Angeles chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council has also recognised the project for its sustainable innovation. Ramon Ponce de Leon, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 13, stated that hydrogen will be essential in meeting future energy demand in California. This sentiment was echoed by George Pla, founder and CEO of Cordoba Corporation, who sees hydrogen as the next infrastructure boom for businesses like theirs.
The microgrid draws power from solar panels on sunny days and converts excess energy into renewable hydrogen, which can be stored and then converted back into electricity via an on-site hydrogen fuel cell. This system ensures reliable and clean, renewable energy 24/7.
The [H2]IE is more than just a demonstration project. It symbolises what the next generation of energy infrastructure can look like in everyday lives. Gene Hale, chairman of the Greater Los Angeles Chamber African American of Commerce, stated that small, minority-owned businesses in Los Angeles are essential for forging sustainable communities and are excited to be a part of innovative projects like the [H2]IE.
In 2021, the [H2] Innovation Experience received a Fast Company's World-Changing Ideas in North America Award, highlighting its potential to reshape the energy landscape. The [H2]IE is not just a project; it's a beacon of hope for a cleaner, greener future.
As Jennifer Barrera, president and CEO of CalChamber, stated, the [H2]IE has significant positive implications for the future of California's businesses, as they need access to clean and reliable energy. The [H2]IE is a shining example of how collaboration between government, industry, and labour can drive innovation and sustainability.
