The Kani City Cultural Creation Center, located in the south-central Gifu Prefecture of Japan, recently installed a Yamaha Active Field Control (AFC) Immersive Audio System to enhance the acoustic experience for its audience.
During a recent performance featuring contemporary dance and an orchestral accompaniment, the system was put to the test. The performance would have been virtually impossible without the Dante network, a technology used by the AFC system for signal exchange, as stated by Hayato Ikeda, a sound engineer with the Kani City Cultural Creation Center.
The AFC system used 37 microphones in the orchestra pit, primarily targeted at string instruments to reinforce sound when the orchestra pit is lowered. Seven boundary microphones on stage were used for the dancers. Two rows of four microphones were hung from the ceiling to collect natural sound in the theater for AFC enhancement. All 52 microphone data was transmitted through Dante during the show.
The microphone inputs were passed through a Yamaha QL5 digital mixer for EQ before being sent to the AFC engine for spatial processing. The acoustic reflection pattern in the main theater has a short reverberation time of about 1.6 seconds, which, combined with the AFC system, resulted in a transformative spatial audio experience that sounded very natural.
The Yamaha AFC Enhance system was used to create acoustic spaces and control acoustic images in the theater. The dancers and orchestra were arranged with the orchestra pit raised from the floor to the stage during the performance. There were no complaints from the musicians and the maestro about the sound quality, indicating the system's success in delivering clearer, more balanced sound with enhanced spatial depth.
