Manufacturer Rivian to Construct $120 Million Supplier Facility in Illinois for R2 Vehicle Assembly
Rivian Expands Supplier Park in Normal, Illinois, with Adient Investment
Rivian, the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is expanding its supplier park in Normal, Illinois, with a significant investment from Adient, a global automotive seating maker. Adient will repurpose an 85,000-square-foot warehouse adjacent to Rivian's plant to assemble seat components specifically for Rivian EVs, creating 75 full-time jobs.
The proximity of suppliers like Adient to Rivian's main manufacturing facility is intended to reduce costs and improve manufacturing efficiency, particularly as Rivian prepares to increase production of its R2 SUV next year.
The supplier park is one of the investments Rivian has made in Normal, supported by $827 million in previously announced state incentives tied to the upcoming R2 model. Rivian will receive $16 million in state incentives for the project, including $5 million in long-term tax breaks through Illinois' Reimagining Energy and Vehicles (REV) program.
In a press release from the office of Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, it was announced that Rivian is building a 1.2 million-square-foot supplier park next to its manufacturing facility in Normal. The park is expected to create at least 100 direct Rivian jobs.
The expansion is part of Rivian's broader $1.5 billion expansion of its Illinois manufacturing plant, which is set to ramp up production capacity for newer models like the R2 starting in 2026. This expansion likely benefits from state-level incentives such as the REV Illinois program, which supported Adient's investment, indicating state interest in promoting EV-related industrial growth.
Rivian currently produces the R1T, R1S, and electric delivery vans at the Normal facility, employing approximately 8,000 people. The new R2, an affordable electric SUV, is scheduled to enter production in the first half of 2026. The supplier park may potentially create hundreds more jobs as suppliers set up operations.
In addition to the $3 million reimbursement for sewer work tied to the expansion, the Town of Normal has also provided additional local tax abatements and infrastructure support for the project. These investments are aimed at fostering growth and innovation in the region.
The expansion of Rivian's supplier park in Normal, Illinois, marks a significant step forward in the company's mission to accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility.
Technology plays a crucial role in the streamlined manufacturing process at Rivian's supplier park, as the proximity to the main facility allows for efficient data exchange and minimizes potential delays caused by communication barriers.
The expanded supplier park, in partnership with high-tech companies like Adient, will enable Rivian to leverage cutting-edge technology in the production of its EVs, pushing the company closer to its goal of sustainable mobility.
