Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, potentially signals a terrifying scenario for Microsoft investors.
In the ever-evolving world of technology, two tech titans, Microsoft and Meta Platforms, are making significant strides in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI).
Microsoft, currently the second-largest company in the world based on market cap, is one of the hottest large-cap tech stocks on the market. Its productivity and business processes segment, which contributes 43% of its total revenue, generated $33.1 billion in the quarter ending June 30, 2025.
Meanwhile, Meta Platforms, known for its social media juggernaut, is making waves with its AI-driven ambitions. The company, one of the two members of the "Magnificent Seven" stocks that have delivered greater gains than Microsoft this year, is aiming to develop advanced AI technologies. This is evident in its partnership with Midjourney for AI-driven aesthetic enhancements and its heavy investment in Google Cloud for maximum computing power.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, recently outlined his company's strategy, which could be interpreted as a warning shot fired across Microsoft's bow. Zuckerberg envisioned a future where every person has a "personal superintelligence that helps you achieve your goals, create what you want to see in the world, experience any adventure, be a better friend to those you care about, and grow to become the person you aspire to be."
However, skepticism about the success of Meta's superintelligence efforts is warranted. Technology executives' predictions in the past have not always come true. Skepticism is further fuelled by Zuckerberg's prediction that Meta's superintelligence initiative will lead to a significant drop in the time people spend using productivity software, which could potentially be Microsoft investors' worst nightmare.
Yet, Meta's dream is to bring personal superintelligence to everyone, which is similar to artificial general intelligence (AGI). AI may continue to use productivity software, as Microsoft is investing heavily in enabling AI to do many of the tasks that people have done with its productivity software.
If trends continue, people might spend less time in productivity software and more time creating and connecting, which could potentially impact Microsoft. Meta's newest AI initiative could potentially change the relationship between Meta and Microsoft.
As the race for AI dominance heats up, both companies are expected to enable long-term investors to sleep peacefully for a long time to come. However, the success of Meta's superintelligence efforts largely depends on how successful they are. Only time will tell who will emerge victorious in this AI race.
