Massive Data Breach Exposes Personal Data of 437,329 Americans - Sensitive Information including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and medical records potentially compromised
Private Healthcare System Suffers Data Breach, Affecting Over 430,000 Americans
A major U.S. private healthcare provider, Ascension, has disclosed a substantial data breach, exposing the personal information of approximately 437,329 individuals. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, the incident was categorized as a hacking/IT breach [1].
The data breach was discovered on December 5, 2024, and involved a former business partner of Ascension. The compromised data included names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, race, gender, Social Security numbers (SSNs), medical record numbers, physician names, admission and discharge dates, diagnoses, billing codes, and insurance company names [2][3][5].
Ascension attributes the breach to a software vulnerability that existed in third-party software used by the former business partner [2][3]. By January 21, 2025, Ascension confirmed that patient data had been stolen as a result of this vulnerability.
In response to the incident, Ascension launched an investigation and initiated breach notification letters to affected individuals in April 2025 [2][3]. The letters provided information about the compromised data and the steps being taken to address the situation.
The breach serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges related to third-party cybersecurity risks in the healthcare sector. Third-party data breaches pose a significant threat to healthcare cybersecurity, as reported by the Ponemon Institute and Imprivata in February 2025 [1]. This incident also follows Ascension's experience of a 5.6-million-record data breach in May 2024 that occurred due to a ransomware attack on its own systems [1][2].
Ascension advises affected individuals to remain vigilant against identity theft and fraud, review their account statements, and monitor their credit reports for suspicious activity. The company is offering complimentary identity monitoring services for a period of two years [5].
