Meta Clarifies AI Ad Targeting: No Secret Conversation Listening
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is updating its privacy policy. From December 16, it will use data from user interactions with AI-generated ads to deliver targeted advertising across its platforms. The company has long denied allegations of secretly listening to users' conversations for this purpose.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently addressed these claims. He stated that Meta does not secretly record users' conversations using their phone microphones to target ads. Instead, the system compares patterns of people who share similar interests. This allows the company to serve ads that appear extremely accurate.
Meta's advanced ad targeting system is built on algorithms and advertiser data sharing. It helps refine ad recommendations, making them more relevant to users. Mosseri suggested that psychology might contribute to the perception of 'creepiness' in targeted advertising.
The company has consistently denied these allegations since at least 2016. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also reiterated this assurance at a US congressional hearing. Mosseri pointed out that secretly recording people would deplete device batteries and produce visible results, such as a microphone indicator light.
Starting December 16, Meta's new privacy policy will allow it to use data gathered from user interactions with its AI products to deliver targeted advertising. The company maintains that it does not secretly listen to users' conversations for this purpose. Instead, it uses patterns of user behaviour and interests to serve relevant ads.
