Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) Boosts Rural Connectivity with the Buffalo Project

In August 2025, Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) launched the Buffalo Project, an ambitious rural network optimisation initiative aimed at enhancing mobile connectivity and service quality in northern rural Namibia, including Outapi, Oshakati, Rundu, and Katima Mulilo [1][2][5].

The project, a response to customer feedback regarding coverage issues in rural areas, was the result of a comprehensive network audit covering over 2,000 kilometres [1][5]. The audit, conducted in collaboration with network partner Huawei, aimed to gain firsthand insight into coverage gaps and service quality challenges in underserved and uncovered rural areas.

Key goals of the Buffalo Project include enhancing network infrastructure, improving LTE coverage, correcting power settings and antenna orientations, and extending stable and faster digital access to rural communities [1][5]. Many of the mobile towers in rural regions are not adequately positioned, with some featuring low antenna heights and limited access to 4G/LTE technology [1][5].

The Buffalo Project is an extension of MTC's commitment to closing the digital divide. It aligns with MTC's broader long-term ambitions for network expansion and follows earlier initiatives like the 081Every1 programme, aimed at increasing network reach [4]. The project was led by MTC's Chief Technology and Information Officer, Monica Nehemia, demonstrating a customer-centric approach to addressing rural telecommunication challenges [1][5].

The Buffalo Project represents a significant step toward improving digital inclusion in rural Namibia by enhancing mobile network infrastructure, expanding 4G/LTE access, and delivering better service quality to remote populations. This is expected to facilitate greater access to digital services and economic opportunities for these communities [1][4][5].

The Buffalo Project will be rolled out to other parts of the country where similar challenges are experienced. MTC remains committed to maintaining quality and consistency across its existing infrastructure as well as investing in new technologies. The company will continue to provide updates on the progress of the Buffalo Project and reinforce its promise of reliable, inclusive, and high-quality connectivity for all Namibians, regardless of geographic location.
