MTV Video Music Awards depend on Shure equipment from Firehouse Productions for their sound needs.
Shure Wireless Technology Shines at Record-Breaking MTV VMAs
The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, held at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y. on Sept. 7, set a new record for the most-viewed and engaged VMAs in history with over 5.5 million viewers. The event was a showcase of stellar performances, and a significant player behind the scenes was Firehouse Productions, who relied on Shure wireless audio technology to deliver exceptional sound quality.
Doja Cat, J Balvin and Mariah Carey, recipients of the 2025 Video Vanguard award, all used Shure wireless technology during their performances. Doja Cat opted for a Beta 54 headset mic, while Carey's performance featured a custom gold Shure Axient Digital handheld transmitter. Carey's new Nexadyne 8 vocal microphone capsule was praised for delivering a crystal-clear vocal that sat perfectly in the mix.
Music mixer John Harris commended the Shure Axient Digital system for providing predictable and rock-solid vocal performances, while audio coordinator Mark Dittmar noted that Shure wireless technology offers seamless technology for executing large shows like the VMAs.
Multiple artists, including Alex Warren, Bailey Zimmerman, Busta Rhymes, Lola Young, Tate McRae, Sabrina Carpenter, Conan Gray, and Lady Gaga (Artist of the Year winner), all used Shure wireless technology for their performances. Lady Gaga used the new Shure SM39 headset microphone for a prerecorded performance.
The Firehouse Productions audio team, including Dittmar, Sean Prickett, Eric Schilling, John Harris, Cameron Stuckey, Dan Gerhard, Adam Armstrong, Simon Welch, Mike Bové, Chris Prinzivalli, Brett Taylor, and Tom Pesa, contributed to the success of the awards show.
The team deployed 110 P10R receivers for the event, and used 56 channels of the Shure Axient Digital Wireless Microphone System and 52 channels of the Shure PSM 1000 In-Ear Personal Monitoring System. The Shure Nexadyne capsule was also highlighted for providing huge clarity, great rejection, and broadcast-ready tone without extra work.
Hugo Pinzon, monitor and broadcast engineer, praised the Shure Nexadyne capsule for delivering a crystal-clear vocal during J Balvin's performance. The Shure Axient Digital wireless handheld transmitters were used by multiple artists throughout the night, ensuring consistent and high-quality sound for the record-breaking event.
