Munich Airport Drone Disruptions Spark Calls for Tighter Security Measures

Munich Airport experienced temporary flight disruptions due to drone sightings on two consecutive evenings, affecting thousands of passengers. The incidents have sparked discussions on enhancing social security measures against drones across Germany.

On Thursday and Friday evenings, unidentified drones caused delays and cancellations at Munich Airport, impacting around 3,000 passengers. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) plans to address this issue by presenting a draft of a new social security law soon. This draft aims to involve the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) in combating drones, potentially allowing them to assist police and shoot down drones in cases of acute threat.

Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder (CSU) views these incidents as part of a series of drone sightings in Europe. Several politicians have called for improved drone defense systems. Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Herbert Reul (CDU) emphasized the need for more capable security authorities, while Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall, stressed the importance of speed in drone defense. Meanwhile, Joachim Herrmann (CSU), interior minister of Bavaria, announced changes to state regulations to allow police to shoot down drones if necessary.

Mustafa Güngör, faction chief of the Bremen SPD, showed interest in establishing a drone defense center in Bremen due to its exposed targets. However, Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) warned against far-reaching deployments of the Bundeswehr in domestic affairs.

Following the Munich Airport drone incidents, politicians are pushing for enhanced social security measures. The proposed new social security law aims to strengthen the response to drone threats, with the involvement of the Bundeswehr. As discussions continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of passengers and preventing further disruptions.
