Musk's father expresses disagreement with son's Mars colonization plan.

In an interview with the Russian newspaper "Izvestia", Errol Musk, the father of American billionaire Elon Musk, expressed his views on Mars flights and space travel. Contrary to his son's ambitious plans for SpaceX, Errol Musk's input primarily revolves around the name inspiration linked to fictional Mars colonization.

Errol Musk claimed that the name "Elon" was inspired by the leader of a Martian colony character named Elon in Wernher von Braun’s 1952 science fiction novel Project Mars. This connection, however, does not provide articulated opinions on the feasibility or development of space travel itself.

While Errol Musk supports the development of space travel, he believes that Mars flights under current conditions are impractical. He also expressed concerns about the numerous risks and lack of information associated with a Mars mission, echoing the sentiments of NASA's acting Director, Janet Petro, who stated that a Mars mission for astronauts within the next five years is not feasible.

In contrast, Elon Musk named the main goal of SpaceX as a flight to Mars, a vision he shared in May. The billionaire entrepreneur also suggested that a return trip to the Moon could be possible during a Mars mission. SpaceX's ventures are, therefore, the primary sources for detailed perspectives on Mars flights and space travel practicality.

Errol Musk also believes that space travel will enable humanity to become a "space race". However, his support for space travel does not necessarily imply support for immediate Mars missions. As the owner of SpaceX and Tesla, a role held by his son, Erlon, Errol Musk's views on Mars flights do not align with SpaceX's ambitious space exploration plans.

NASA, too, has expressed concerns about the dangers associated with a Mars mission. In April, the space agency estimated the possibility of sending a Mars mission by the end of the decade, but highlighted the many challenges and lack of sufficient information that would need to be addressed before such a mission could be undertaken.

Despite the challenges, Elon Musk's SpaceX is still pursuing a Mars mission as its main goal. The company's relentless pursuit of space travel technology and its vision of colonizing Mars continue to captivate the world, leaving no doubt about Elon Musk's determination to make space travel a reality.

Space.com and The Guardian frequently discuss Errol Musk's support for space travel, despite his reservations about immediate Mars missions and the risks involved, which echoes the sentiments of NASA's acting Director.

Elon Musk's vision for SpaceX, including a Mars mission and Moon return trip, aligns with his belief that space travel will propel humanity to become a "space race," whereas his father, Errol Musk, primarily focuses on the name inspiration linked to fictional Mars colonization, rather than the practicality of space travel and Mars flights.
