Nvidia Invests $100B in OpenAI, Securing Future in AI Data Centers
Nvidia is pouring up to $100 billion into OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI software ChatGPT, to secure its role in future data centers. This significant investment will support the construction of new AI data centers powered by Nvidia technology.
ChatGPT, launched in late 2022, has amassed an impressive 700 million weekly active users, making it the most used AI software to date. Nvidia, a key supplier of chip systems for AI training and operation, is solidifying its position as the heart of these future data centers.
The investment, announced in September 2025, grants OpenAI a warrant to acquire up to 10 percent of AMD shares, approximately 160 million shares, at a nominal price, contingent on milestones. This gives OpenAI a 10 percent stake in AMD, while Nvidia strengthens its strategic engagement with OpenAI, although no specific Nvidia ownership share of OpenAI is reported. Financial news service Bloomberg also confirms that Nvidia will receive a stake in OpenAI.
The first phase of this investment is set to go online in the second half of 2026, with the deployment of chip systems from Nvidia's new Vera Rubin platform. Nvidia's chips have become a staple in artificial intelligence, with large AI developers investing billions in them and filling entire data centers with their technology.
Nvidia's substantial investment in OpenAI, along with the deployment of its new Vera Rubin platform, underscores the company's commitment to maintaining its leading role in AI data centers. This strategic move is expected to further boost Nvidia's influence in the AI landscape, while also expanding OpenAI's stake in AMD.
