OpenAI Expands Free ChatGPT, Adds Projects Feature and Boosts Model Access
OpenAI has expanded its free ChatGPT service, introducing new features and increasing access to premium models. The latest updates include the Projects feature, now available to all users, and the rollout of Deep Research and ChatGPT Voice tools.
The Projects feature, previously exclusive to paid plans, enables users to group past conversations for quick reference. All three pricing tiers - Free, ChatGPT Plus ($20/month), and ChatGPT Pro ($200/month) - now include this functionality. Free users can upload up to five files per project, Plus users up to 25, and Pro users up to 40.
OpenAI has also increased the context window size for GPT-5 models, supporting up to 256,000 tokens, though free tiers may have stricter caps or rate limits. The company has been gradually increasing premium features and model access for free users, with GPT-5 now available for free (with limited usage), a shift from the paid requirement for GPT-4 two years ago.
These updates demonstrate OpenAI's commitment to improving the free ChatGPT experience, offering more tools and resources to users without a paid subscription. The Projects feature, in particular, is expected to enhance productivity and convenience for users.
