OpenStack Flamingo Released with 8,000+ Changes and New Features
OpenStack has unveiled its latest iteration, Flamingo, with over 8,000 modifications contributed by approximately 480 individuals and organizations. This release, like its predecessors, strives to broaden OpenStack's user base and incorporate new features to enhance its capabilities.
Flamingo, the 32nd version of OpenStack, introduces several significant enhancements. A notable addition is one-time passthrough for dedicated hardware use in virtual machines, supported by AMD's Secure Encrypted Virtualization. Additionally, the Skyline dashboard now includes a rescue feature and improved network security. The Ironic module, responsible for bare-metal provisioning, has been made truly multi-threaded with the removal of eventlet, a library with maintenance issues and potential bugs. The Manila shared file system service now supports bring your own key (BYOK) encryption and thin provisioning for shares.
OpenStack continues to grow and adapt, with the next release, OpenStack 2026.1 (Gazpacho), slated for April 2026. This ongoing development reflects OpenStack's commitment to expanding its user base, which currently stands at 55 million cores in production.
OpenStack Flamingo, with its new features and improvements, underscores the project's commitment to innovation and expansion. As OpenStack continues to evolve, it remains an open-source platform driven by a diverse community of contributors, aiming to meet the growing needs of its user base.
