Phone's Durability Test: Folding and Unfolding Galaxy Z Fold 7 Mobile Over 200,000 Times
In a recent durability test conducted by the South Korean YouTube channel Tech-it, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, claimed by Samsung to withstand up to 500,000 folds, showed mixed real-world performance after being manually folded 200,000 times.
Key findings from the 200,000 manual folds test:
- Issues began to surface as early as 6,000 folds, with occasional reboots possibly due to constant state switching.
- At 46,000 folds, the hinge started to creak, signalling early mechanical strain.
- Around 75,000 folds, an unknown black liquid leaked from the hinge, indicating potential internal damage.
- By 175,000 folds, all speakers, including the earpiece, ceased functioning.
- Despite these issues, the folding mechanism reportedly became smoother towards the end, and the phone could still hold its shape at any angle.
- The inner display remained functional with no flickering or visible damage after over 100,000 folds, although the crease became noticeably deeper after about 105,000 folds.
Samsung's lab tests, however, highlight the Z Fold 7's improvements. The device uses a thicker Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), stronger adhesives, a titanium plate backing the screen, and an advanced Armor FlexHinge, claiming durability through 500,000 folds (equivalent to about 10 years of typical daily use).
However, these tests were conducted under controlled conditions, unlike the manual test which reflects real-world variations in force and speed.
In summary, while Samsung's official durability rating is 500,000 folds, the manual folding test by Tech-it revealed significant mechanical and functional issues well before reaching that mark. This suggests that real-world durability may be lower than lab estimates, and users might encounter problems after tens of thousands of folds rather than hundreds of thousands.
Samsung has not yet responded to the test findings.
