Police Chief Urges Nationwide Drone Defense System for German Police
Jochen Kopelke, the federal chairman of the Police Trade Union (GdP), has urged German Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) to promptly equip all police forces with a nationwide drone protection system. Kopelke stressed the growing frequency of drone sightings and spying incidents, making such a system an urgent necessity.
Kopelke believes that companies can deliver the technology swiftly upon order, and the police will provide a training concept to ensure immediate operability. He suggested that the drone protection system should also be capable of safeguarding critical infrastructure and other locations, not just public events.
Currently, there is no public information identifying the manufacturer of the drone protection technology that Dobrindt intends to procure for the police. However, Argus Interception has delivered drone capture systems to the German armed forces, though these are not specifically mentioned for police procurement. Kopelke acknowledged that while current technology exists to safeguard events from drones, not all police forces have access to it due to financial and technological limitations.
Kopelke's call for a nationwide drone protection system aims to enhance police forces' capabilities in countering the increasing threat of drones. The system, once procured and distributed, will help secure both public events and critical infrastructure, ensuring the safety and security of German citizens.
