The world of design is heavily influenced by the principles of Gestalt, a German philosophy that posits the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Developed by psychologists in the early 20th century in Austria and Germany, Gestalt aims to better understand human perception.

Closure, another principle, refers to the brain's tendency to fill in the gaps and perceive complete shapes or objects even when they are incomplete. A classic example of this is the IBM logo, where the letters in the company's name become apparent in our brains, even though the logo is not fully drawn.
Pragnanz, also known as the law of good Gestalt, states that humans prefer experiences that are simple and orderly and will simplify perceived complexity. This principle helps us understand how and why our brains operate under the other Gestalt principles.
Invariance describes the fact that the mind can recognize certain objects independent of other factors like rotation, scale, or distortion. This principle is particularly useful in design, as it allows for flexibility while maintaining recognition.
Multistability refers to the brain's tendency to shift between perceptual experiences given ambiguous inputs. This principle is often used in design to create dynamic and engaging experiences.
Reification refers to how the mind often perceives more visual information than what it literally sees. This principle can be used in design to create a richer, more immersive experience.
Continuity posits that the brain will follow a path that's literal or implied by the objects it sees, helping to explain why we see moving pictures rather than individual photographs when watching films. This principle is crucial in creating a seamless and engaging user experience.
Symmetry refers to the tendency of the brain to be drawn to symmetry and balance in visual designs. This principle can be used to create a sense of harmony and order in design.
Past experience plays a significant role in how the brain interprets new visual information. For instance, the combination of red, yellow, and green circles is immediately understood as a traffic light due to our past experiences.
In addition to these principles, effective contrast, consistent colour coding, sparing use of motion, storytelling, and social proof are emphasized to enhance visual communication and emotional connection. By applying these principles in design, designers can improve information clarity, reader engagement, and outcome effectiveness, creating a focused, coherent presentation.
