Kuala Lumpur Hosts 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings

KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 - Diplomatic delegates from across the Asia-Pacific region are arriving today in Kuala Lumpur for the 46th ASEAN Summit and related meetings. Malaysia, the host country, anticipates the gathering of leaders from ASEAN member states, Timor-Leste, and foreign partners, including the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and China.

Among the early arrivals were United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, who landed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 2.16 pm. ASEAN secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn followed at 2.40 pm, while Saudi Arabia's Deputy Minister for International Multilateral Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Rassi touched down at 3 pm. Timor-Leste's Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister Bendito dos Santos Freitas arrived at 5 pm, and Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son landed at 5.45 pm.

The 46th ASEAN Summit will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on May 26 and 27. These discussions will be complemented by the second ASEAN-GCC Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.

The ASEAN Summit serves as a platform for leaders to discuss regional developments and chart the future direction of the regional grouping. This is Malaysia's fifth time hosting the ASEAN Summit, having previously done so in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.

The ASEAN member states consist of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Additionally, Timor-Leste is participating. The summit also entails dialogues with external partners, such as the GCC and China, and discussions with foreign countries such as Canada and India, regarding free trade agreements.

Notable leaders involved in the summit include Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet, Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto, Timor-Leste's Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao, Laos' Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, the Philippines' President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, and Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
