Regional Bahn Pioneers Green Mobility with Hydrogen Trains
The Regional Bahn RB27 has pioneered a green initiative, replacing diesel-powered trains with fuel cell-operated vehicles on the Heidekrautbahn between Berlin and Brandenburg. These hydrogen-powered trains, Mireo Plus H type from Siemens Mobility, have been running smoothly for half a year, marking a significant step towards diesel-free mobility in the region.
The pilot project, accompanied scientifically by the German Center for Air and Space Travel and the Brandenburg Technical University of Cottbus-Senftenberg, aims to establish a complete hydrogen infrastructure. The trains, with a range of up to 1,200 kilometers, are equipped with the latest fuel cell system.
After initial logistical hurdles, the operation of hydrogen trains is now running smoothly. Kreiswerke Barnim is coordinating the project and building the filling station, while Enertrag is constructing an electrolyzer near the railway line, set to produce green hydrogen from 2026. The Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg plans to achieve diesel-free mobility in the entire association area by 2037.
The successful implementation of hydrogen trains on the Heidekrautbahn demonstrates the potential of green mobility. With Kreiswerke Barnim and Enertrag leading the infrastructure development, and the scientific backing of the German Center for Air and Space Travel and the Brandenburg Technical University, the region is well on its way to achieving its diesel-free mobility goal by 2037.
