In the endless race to reduce emissions and save every bit of carbon dioxide, Toyota is revving up its game. Now, they're hybridizing the compact Aygo X, and we've had a sneak peek at the tech. And, girl, this baby's got some modifications!
Toyota may be a hybrid trailblazer, but their tiny ride, the Aygo X, hasn't seen a twin-engine yet. Don't be fooled by its sub-three-meter size though; it's got some backbone, just like its slightly larger sibling, the Yaris. Both are based on the "Toyota Global New Architecture." And since the Yaris already rocks a hybrid, let's assume the Aygo X followed suit without much hassle.
Wait up, though! There's more. Toyota's giving the 3.78-meter-long Aygo X a slight makeover. The headlights have a fresh new look, while the grille and hood both got a tweak. The engineers tweaked the exterior too, extending the front end by eight centimeters to cram in the new powertrain. And the battery stacks? They're installed in a snazzy new side-by-side configuration under the rear seats, leaving the already meager 231-liter cargo space unaffected. The starter battery found its home in the trunk, thank goodness.
More Torque, Less Fuel
So, what's in it for Aygo X enthusiasts? More muscle and a smoother ride, baby! Bye-bye, one-liter three-cylinder. Hello, 1.5-liter four-cylinder! It’s got an extra 20 horses up its sleeve. And then there’s an 80-horsepower electric unit—for an overall system power of 116 PS (that's a nod to the Yaris). Toyota promises improved fuel efficiency—around one liter less per 100 kilometers.
More comfort's in the mix, too. Expect enhanced soundproofing and a rejiggered exhaust system to muffle the noise. An underbody cover and thicker windows help block out the outside ruckus as well.
Lit Inside
As for the interior, it's a sizzling scene of tailored vinyl and digital dashboard displays. You'll find a seven-inch digital instrument cluster there, showing you the juicy interaction between the electric motor and the internal combustion engine. The Aygo X also comes standard with two USB-C ports, while "fancy" features like wireless smartphone charging, over-the-air updates, and a digital key are now optional or available for the first time.
FYI, the Aygo X is getting a "GR Sport" edition soon, baby. This bad boy features a two-tone paint job, showcases that waffle grille, and rocks swanky alloy wheels. The interior's sporty, too, with gray and black accents and a stitched GR logo. Get ready, 'cause it's gonna ride smooth with a suspension that's been specially tuned, darling.
Sadly, no official word yet on the price or release date for the Aygo X 'GR Sport' edition. But with a starting price of £16,845 for the non-hybrid, expect a noticeable increase for the hybrid version. It's already got the automatic gearbox and hybrid tech that give it a boost on the road.
