"Review of 'Earthion': Remarkable and Unique Space Shooter Game"
Earthion, the latest addition to the shmup genre, has been making waves in the gaming community. Developed by the esteemed duo Yuzo Koshiro and Makoto Wada, alongside indie developers Benjamin Yoris and JMB, this game was brought to life by Bitwave Games and Ancient Corporation.
This fast-paced, 2D horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up is a visual and auditory delight. The music, composed by the veteran talent Yuzo Koshiro, sets the stage with an exhilarating soundtrack that complements the insanely fast-paced yet extremely detailed visuals.
The gameplay mechanics are involved yet streamlined, providing a challenging yet rewarding experience. Each time you take a hit, you lose shield energy and your weapons' power is reduced. However, the regenerative shield and base shot that can be upgraded by picking up green gems offer a chance to bounce back.
Earthion's art direction is rooted in a solid understanding of mecha design, resulting in top-notch ship, enemy, and mecha designs with a '90s execution. The game's visuals are noteworthy, pushing what the Mega Drive can do, and the ship's power-up slots for different weapons, which can also be upgraded and switched between, add an extra layer of strategy.
The game features a 'warning' sound when your shield gets low and boasts excellent enemy sound effects. In one of the later levels, players encounter body-horror-type monstrosities with unnerving screams, adding to the game's immersive atmosphere.
Earthion was published by Limited Run Games and released on 18th September 2025. It is available on Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, priced at $19.99. The game has received a score of 9/10, making it a definitive shmup and a must-play for fans of the genre.
With its modern take on retro gaming, Earthion is a standout title that is built as a modern Mega Drive game with a cartridge release planned for next year. Whether you're a seasoned shmup player or new to the genre, Earthion offers a thrilling experience that is sure to satisfy.
