RTA Launches More Than 60 Vehicles for Road Mapping and Data Gathering in Pursuit of Autonomous Transportation

Embrace the new wave of transportation as Dubai stirs the winds of change with its bold plans for autonomous taxis! The city is aggressively moving towards this future, with the expected launch of self-driving taxis by as early as Q1 2026.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is leading the charge, mapping roads, gathering data, and scouting routes to pave the way for this technological leap in mobility. Over 60 autonomous vehicles have been deployed for the initial phases, marking a monumental stride towards self-driving taxis in Dubai's cityscape.

The first phase will focus on assessing key routes, followed by pilot operations in up to 65 designated zones, carefully chosen based on strict safety parameters. These zones will be handpicked to ensure seamless integration with Dubai's renowned road safety standards.

Exciting developments have unfolded, with the RTA forging strategic partnerships with Uber Technologies, WeRide, and Baidu. The signings of these agreements in March further solidify Dubai's stance as a frontrunner in autonomous technology adoption.

This initiative aligns with Dubai's Self-Driving Transport Strategy, aiming to convert 25 percent of all mobility journeys in the city to autonomous vehicles by 2030. This ambitious goal received the attention of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, who was briefed on the latest advancements in autonomous vehicles, particularly their potential to bolster road safety. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the RTA, expressed confidence that autonomous vehicles can considerably decrease the number of traffic accidents, largely caused by human error.

The RTA has also been making strides in enhancing traffic flow through innovative technologies. The use of drones and AI for monitoring construction projects has already led to substantial improvements in operational efficiency, reducing field survey time by 60 percent and increasing project oversight by 40 percent. The incorporation of time-lapse imaging technology has further reduced delays by 20 percent, ensuring timely completion of infrastructure projects across the emirate.

As the city gears up to become a global center for avant-garde transportation solutions, autonomous vehicles are setting the stage for a wave of change in Dubai's transport sector.
