Samsung Delays Large-scale Manufacturing of V9 QLC Flash Memory

Samsung, the current leader in the NAND market, has been facing setbacks in its quest to advance its memory technology. The company's developer team responsible for the ninth generation NAND memory, V9 QLC, is known as the Development Team for V-NAND Technology.

However, Samsung has encountered issues in developing the V9 QLC, a high-capacity memory solution that uses 280 layers of memory. These challenges have resulted in a delay in the mass production of V9 QLC chips, pushing the timeline back to at least the first half of 2026.

The issues with the V9 QLC have caused Samsung to lag in the QLC segment of the NAND market. In contrast, the company's top QLC products are still based on the older V7 technology.

In an attempt to stay competitive, Samsung introduced more complex QLC variants of its NAND memory in September 2024. However, the first batches of these chips showed serious performance issues due to design errors.

Despite these setbacks, Samsung has made strides in other areas. In April 2024, the company began mass production of TLC chips with a capacity of 1TB. This move demonstrates Samsung's commitment to pushing the boundaries of memory technology and maintaining its position as a leading player in the industry.

As the V9 QLC development continues, Samsung will undoubtedly face more challenges and opportunities. The company's ability to overcome these hurdles and bring the V9 QLC to market will be a crucial factor in determining its future in the NAND market.

In the meantime, Samsung will continue to rely on its established V7 technology for its QLC products, hoping to maintain its lead in the overall NAND market.
