Samsung's flagship smartphone of the year may debut in the American market this year
In the ever-evolving world of technology, Samsung is making waves with its innovative designs and plans for the future. The South Korean tech giant is reportedly considering a tri-fold smartphone for release in the United States, marking a first for US smartphones and Samsung.
This ambitious move comes as part of Samsung's design philosophy for future product launches, including its flagship Galaxy S series, which is focused on making devices slimmer. The idea of a port-free phone has also been internally floated, but Samsung currently has no plans to develop a phone without a charging port.
Samsung's first tri-fold smartphone is expected to provide a larger screen than its current foldable phones, offering an exciting prospect for consumers who value a larger viewing experience. The release timeline for this device is still on track for the end of the year, according to Samsung's global head of smartphone product planning.
Meanwhile, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7, launched over the summer, boasts an eight-inch screen when unfolded, making it smaller than a standard iPhone 15 or iPhone 17. The sales of the Galaxy S25 Edge, however, are reportedly falling short of expectations.
The focus on slimness has fueled speculation about the emergence of phones with no charging ports, a trend that Apple is also reportedly considering for its iPhone Air, set to launch on Friday. Apple is also said to be planning to introduce its first foldable phone as early as 2026.
In the global smartphone market, Samsung and Apple collectively account for approximately 35% of phones shipped worldwide. The annual shipment of smartphones worldwide reached an estimated 1.2 billion units in 2024. Foldable phone shipments are expected to reach 45.7 million units by 2028.
Samsung is also planning to release a sequel to the Galaxy S25 Edge in the first quarter of next year, alongside the Galaxy S26 lineup. The company has shown concepts of devices that fold into thirds at trade shows such as the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
However, Samsung has previously considered a smartphone with a transparent screen, but the compromises would have outweighed the benefits. The search results do not provide information about the global head of product planning for smartphones at Samsung.
As Samsung and other tech giants continue to push the boundaries of innovation, consumers can expect an exciting future filled with new and exciting devices. The release of Samsung's tri-fold smartphone will be a bet that consumers are willing to splurge to fit an even larger screen in their pockets.
