Scams Targeted Over £2.85M from UK Residents This Summer
Residents in Surrey, Essex, Kent, Somerset, and West Sussex were the most targeted by scams over the summer, with over £2.85 million stolen, according to Santander. Monzo reports that one in five Britons have fallen victim to scams, losing nearly £2,000 per incident. Scammers are most active on Wednesdays at 2pm, targeting people while they're distracted or busy.
Scams often occur while people are scrolling on social media in the evenings. It takes an average of 20 hours for victims to realise they've been scammed. Those working in technology or engineering sectors were most affected last year, making up a fifth of reported cases. Younger people tend to fall for investment scams, while older adults are targeted by impersonation fraud. On average, those aged 25 to 34 lose the most, with £2,118 per scam, compared to £1,566 for those aged 55 and over.
Scammers are active and adaptable, targeting different regions, professions, and age groups with various tactics. Stay vigilant, especially on social media in the evenings and on Wednesdays at 2pm, and report any suspicious activity.
