Schufa's Forteil Suffers Major Data Breach, Bonify Users Exposed
Schufa's subsidiary, Forteil, has suffered a significant cyberattack, leading to a data breach that affects users of the Bonify app. The incident has raised concerns about potential identity fraud and comes at a critical time for Schufa, which is currently working on a scoring system reform.
Unauthorized access was gained to user identification data, including identification documents, address data, photos, and videos. The breach was discovered when Forteil noticed suspicious activities on its systems. The cause of the data breach is currently under investigation, with both external data leak and insider attack being considered.
Affected customers are being provided with free identity protection for six months, including monitoring of personal data on the internet. However, the data leak could have serious consequences for users, including potential contract fraud in areas with lower regulatory requirements. Schufa and Forteil are urging customers to be vigilant for suspicious activities on their accounts and contracts, and to report any identity fraud to the police.
The affected data was collected through the provider ID Now, which Forteil uses for video identification. Account data, stored account information, or creditworthiness data were not compromised in the attack.
Bonify admitted that financial demands were made in connection with the attack, but details are not known for tactical reasons. The search for the identity service provider responsible for the data breach is ongoing. Schufa and Forteil are committed to supporting affected users and strengthening their security measures to prevent future incidents.
