Shell Joins Ionity to Boost UK & Europe's EV Charging Infrastructure
Royal Dutch Shell has embarked on a significant venture, joining the Ionity project to install fast charging points for electric vehicles (EVs) across the UK and Europe. The first three Shell gas stations in the UK have already opened with EV charging points last month.
The Ionity project, backed by prominent industry leaders, aims to establish 400 fast-charge electric stations by 2020. These stations will support charge rates up to 350kW, significantly reducing charging times. Shell, as part of this project, will begin delivering charging stations in 10 countries.
Initially, Shell will set up Ionity charging points at 80 of its largest gas stations, with an average of six charging points at each. This rollout will provide a substantial boost to the EV charging infrastructure. The charging process at these Ionity points will take an average of five to eight minutes, depending on the car's charging capabilities.
The collaboration between Shell and the Ionity project marks a significant step towards facilitating long-distance travel for EV drivers. With plans to expand to 80 Shell gas stations and 400 stations across Europe by 2020, this initiative is set to enhance the convenience and practicality of electric vehicle ownership.
