Sony Electronics has launched a new handheld XDCAM camcorder, the PXW-Z300, tailored for news and production applications. This innovative device offers a host of features that make it an ideal tool for capturing action-packed content, breaking stories, or producing educational documentaries.

At the heart of the PXW-Z300 are three 1/2-inch 4K Exmor R CMOS sensors, combined with the powerful BIONZ XR image processor and a dedicated AI processing unit. This trio delivers outstanding image quality with excellent color accuracy, low noise, and high detail, even in 4K 60p recording. The camcorder also boasts a 17x optical zoom lens with a constant F1.9 aperture, providing flexible shooting capabilities for diverse environments.

The PXW-Z300 introduces advanced AI-powered subject recognition autofocus. This technology detects face, eye, skeletal structure, and posture, maintaining focus even when subjects face away, wear masks, or are backlit. An auto-framing function further enhances dynamic shooting by automatically adjusting composition to keep human subjects centered.

The camcorder's network functions have been enhanced for modern production workflows that utilize 5G and cloud technologies. This enables live streaming from shooting locations and efficient file transfer over networks. The PXW-Z300 also embeds digital signatures directly into video files for content authenticity, a feature particularly beneficial for the news and production industry.

Professional operability is ensured with three independent manual control rings for focus, zoom, and iris, a Side V-Mount for secure attachment of smartphones or data transmitters, and overall intuitive control suitable for fast-paced production environments. The PXW-Z300 comes with a professional lens system and offers MXF file recording in MPEG HD422, XAVC Intra (4K/HD 4:2:2 10bit), and XAVC Long (4K 4:2:0 8bit/HD 4:2:2 10bit), as well as MP4 proxy recording in HEVC.

Kento Sayama, the deputy head of the PXW-Z300, stated that the new enhancements of the camcorder will be beneficial for the industry. With its combination of image quality, operational flexibility, and modern connectivity, the PXW-Z300 is well-suited for broadcast news, documentaries, and event production, meeting professional demands in fast, unpredictable environments.
