Dead Island 2 Multiplayer: Crossplay, Co-op, and Quick Chat Details

Dead Island 2, the zombie-slaying action game, offers a unique multiplayer experience that caters to various platforms, but with some limitations.

Crossplay Restrictions

Dead Island 2 does not support full crossplay across different console families and PCs. This means that players on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC cannot play together in the same game sessions. Instead, the game offers limited cross-generation multiplayer only within the same console family:

  • PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players can play together.
  • Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S players can team up together.

On PC, crossplay is supported between Steam and Epic Game Store players, allowing PC gamers from different launchers to play together freely.

Cooperative Play and Hosting

Dead Island 2 supports cooperative play with up to three players, but only among these compatible groups. Cross progression between different platform families is not available, so progress and multiplayer remain isolated to each platform family.

To host a Dead Island 2 multiplayer session, players on PS4 Pro / PS5, Xbox One X / Xbox Series X or S must choose Continue Game from the main menu and set Game Type to Public, Invite Only, or Friends Only. Unfortunately, those on base PS4 or Xbox One / Xbox One S are unable to host due to graphical requirements.

Gameplay and Features

In Dead Island 2 multiplayer, the game cannot be paused even if you're the only player connected. The player hosting a session runs everything through their own console, while joining an existing game can be done from the main menu, displaying friends playing and offering a Quick Join option.

The game uses peer-to-peer connection instead of servers, and it offers quick chat options via the Emote Wheel. Options for quick chat include Agree, Say Thanks, Point, Wave, Disagree, Suggest Resupply, Ask For Help, and Celebrate. Using the Emote Wheel in Dead Island 2 multiplayer also triggers a quip from your character.

However, be aware that zombies can still attack and kill you while in menus when playing Dead Island 2 multiplayer, so extra care should be taken to ensure safety before accessing inventory or collectibles.

The developers are working on a solution for the hosting limitation, but it is currently in place. To unlock co-op mode, players must complete the "Call the Cavalry" mission in the single-player campaign.
