Summer Olympics & Politics Boost NBC & Fox, YouTube Leads TV Usage
The Summer Olympics and increased political news coverage boosted viewership for NBCUniversal and Fox News respectively, while streaming services, led by YouTube, reached a record share of total TV usage in July 2024.
NBCUniversal's share of TV climbed to 9.5% in July, driven by a 33% increase for Peacock and a 24% increase across broadcast affiliates, thanks to the Summer Olympics. Meanwhile, Disney finished July with the second largest share of TV at 9.9%, leading all media distributors year-to-date with 11.0% of TV viewing through seven months.
Fox News Channel saw a 39% increase in viewing due to political news coverage, contributing to a 16% increase for Fox overall, which finished July with a 7.4% share of total TV usage. YouTube's viewership surged, driven by school-aged viewers (P2-17), who accounted for nearly 30% of YouTube's viewership and 13% of overall TV viewing.
In a significant shift, streaming services collectively reached a record share of total TV usage in July 2024, with YouTube becoming the leading media distributor, accounting for 10.4% of total TV viewing. This marks the first time a streaming platform has ranked first in the Media Distributor Gauge chart and exceeded 10% of total TV usage in a given month.
