TataX opens its largest electric vehicle charging station proximally to Mumbai airport
In a significant stride towards expanding India's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, Tata Power and Tata Motors have jointly inaugurated the TATA.ev MegaCharger at Mumbai's airport. This charging hub, strategically located and powered entirely by renewable energy, marks a milestone in the mission to create widespread, fast, and reliable EV charging facilities across the country.
Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO and MD of Tata Power, expressed his enthusiasm about the new hub, stating that it aims to set a benchmark for future-ready EV infrastructure. The hub, equipped with eight fast DC chargers, each with an output of 120 kW, can accommodate 16 vehicles charging simultaneously.
Tata Motors, which continues to dominate India's EV sales charts, sees this charging hub as a small but crucial step in Mumbai's transport landscape. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., expressed excitement about scaling this partnership to empower EV owners across India.
Airports, often where a city puts its best foot forward, provide a highly visible and utilitarian location for the Tata charging hub. If similar charging hubs are replicated across high-density zones, they could ease concerns around range and charging access, making electric vehicles more accessible for everyday commuters.
Tata Power, with over 1,000 charging points in Mumbai and over 5,500 nationwide, has initiated the Tata.ev MegaCharger network in India. The company aims to install 7.5 lakh home chargers and 10,000 public charging points by 2030.
The chargers at the new hub are open to all EVs, but Tata.ev owners receive perks like discounted rates and priority access. However, further details about these perks were not available in the provided information.
The transition to electric vehicles for Tata cannot be a walled garden, as they dominate the Indian EV market. The success of Tata's electric vehicles depends on infrastructure keeping pace with vehicles on the road. The Tata charging hub at the airport could set a precedent for future charging infrastructure in high-density zones, paving the way for a more sustainable and electric future for India.
It is worth noting that a separate piece, "Tata Motors passes GST cut benefits, slashes prices by up to ₹1.55 lakh," details how Tata Motors is making electric vehicles more affordable for consumers. This move, coupled with the expansion of charging infrastructure, could further boost the adoption of electric vehicles in India.
