Tesla Permanently Shuts Down Supercharger Station at CrossIron Mills in Calgary, Alberta
In a surprising turn of events, the Tesla Supercharger station located at CrossIron Mills in Calgary, Canada, has been permanently decommissioned. This marks the first permanent closure of a Tesla Supercharger station in Canada and the first in Alberta.
The closure was due to a lease disagreement between Tesla and CrossIron Mills management, primarily surrounding a proposed profit-sharing model. CrossIron Mills wanted a share of the revenue generated by the Supercharger station, but Tesla did not agree to these terms, leading to Tesla's decision to terminate the lease and remove the charging station from the property.
The CrossIron Mills Supercharger, which opened in late 2017, quickly became a key charging location for Tesla owners in the Calgary area and those traveling along the Queen Elizabeth II Highway. Equipped with eight V2 (150 kW) stalls, it was one of the first Supercharger stations in the region during the early years of Tesla's network expansion across Western Canada.
Despite its significance as a crucial charging hub, Tesla did not announce the closure, leaving some owners with hope that the site was being upgraded to V3 (250kW). However, the station still appears as temporarily closed in Tesla's app and navigation systems.
Tesla has since added a new V4 (325kW) Supercharger in Calgary, located on Aviation Road NE next to the Calgary International Airport. This development comes after the lease for the CrossIron Mills Supercharger was set to expire during renewal negotiations, during which CrossIron Mills management wanted to add a revenue-sharing clause, which Tesla does not accommodate.
The closure of the CrossIron Mills Supercharger impacts Tesla drivers who relied on it for convenient charging in the Calgary region. Alternatives now include adapters for other charging networks or the newer 12-station charger near Calgary International Airport.
The dispute and closure may also set a precedent impacting future lease renewals for other Supercharger sites in Alberta, such as those in Red Deer and Canmore. CrossIron Mills confirmed that Tesla made the decision to close the Supercharger, and the site is still appearing on Tesla's mobile app and in-car navigation as being temporarily closed, but CrossIron Mills have confirmed on their website that it is being decommissioned.

The lease disagreement between Tesla and CrossIron Mills management, centered around a profit-sharing model, led to the decommissioning of the Tesla Supercharger station, marking a significant move in the automotive industry's finance sector. The closure of this Supercharger station, which was a crucial charging location for Tesla owners in Calgary, may set a precedent for future leases in the Alberta transportation sector, especially in Red Deer and Canmore. In response to this development, Tesla has added a new Supercharger station equipped with V4 technology near the Calgary International Airport.
