Tesla's More Affordable Model Y 'Juniper' Coming Soon
Tesla is set to unveil a more affordable electric vehicle (EV) based on the Model Y within weeks. Codenamed 'Juniper', this variant will feature a comprehensive facelift with improved design, aerodynamics, and efficiency. However, recent software updates hint at cost-cutting measures to achieve this lower price point.
The upcoming Model Y 2025 Juniper will sport a new outer design, codenamed E41, with a solid roof replacing the glass one. It will also come with smaller 18-inch wheels featuring aerocovers and side repeater cameras for enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities. The headlight design will be slimmer, and the rear lights won't extend inwards.
Inside, the car will have no rear screen, a simpler audio system, basic headliner, fewer interior lights, and removal of puddle lights. Powered mirrors and certain interior features will also be absent. These changes aim to reduce production costs without compromising the vehicle's core functionality.
Tesla has delayed production of this more affordable EV to focus on increasing Model Y deliveries before US tax credits expire. Recent spy shots near GigaTexas confirm the exterior changes, giving the model the appearance of a more trimmed-down Model Y. Elon Musk humorously described the upcoming model as looking like the Model Y during a company earnings call.
The 2026 Tesla Model Y Standard variant, as it's now being referred to, is expected to enter mass production by the end of the year following its full reveal within weeks. Despite the cost-cutting measures, Tesla aims to maintain the Model Y's core features and driving experience in this more affordable version.
