Reimagining the Urban Cruiser: Electric Toyota's Off-Road Wonder
Toyota Urban Cruiser AWD delivers a solid performance during departure.
Take a fresh look at the electric Toyota Urban Cruiser! Contrary to its namesake, this compact SUV is no city slicker. Equipped with powerful drivetrains, it transforms into a dynamic performer and even tackles lighter off-road adventures with its all-wheel-drive (AWD) capability.
Stepping into the competitive B-segment market, Toyota introduces the electric Urban Cruiser, a collaborative development with Suzuki that shares its technical base with the identical eVitara. Two front-wheel-drive (FWD) editions offer 106 kW/144 PS and 128 kW/174 PS, while the top AWD version cranks out 135 kW/184 PS. It's a powerhouse, considering it's designed primarily for city environments. Set to hit the roads around €30,000, deliveries are scheduled for the second half of the year.
First impressions are strong, with a bold design that includes a muscular front end, LED daytime running lights, and protective black plastic underbody cladding, exuding a robust feel. The interior boasts a mix of classic controls and a modern cockpit with a touchscreen, presenting essential information in a clear and organized manner. While the off-road appearance may seem ambitious, even the AWD model's capabilities exceed the needs of most urban adventurers.
The FWD models feature a motor at the front axle with 193 Newton meters of torque each. The entry-level model sports a 49 kWh battery, covering up to 344 kilometers (WLTP) with a consumption of 14.9 kWh/100 km. The 144 PS variant sports a 61 kWh battery and can travel up to 426 kilometers, consuming 15.1 kWh/100 km.
The AWD model uses a larger battery and an additional rear-mounted electric motor, delivering 307 Newton meters of torque and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. Toyota employs Lithium Iron Phosphate cells for both battery sizes, which, although cheaper, have a lower energy density compared to conventional Lithium-ion batteries.
During a test drive, the AWD Urban Cruiser proved to be quiet, agile, and confident in city traffic. Its rear motor assists at low speeds below 90 km/h when front-wheel traction is insufficient, resulting in a maximum range of 395 kilometers. The firm suspension and noticeable wind noise at high speeds somewhat dampen the driving experience.
The interior is characterized by clean lines and functional design. Besides traditional switches and touch controls, the infotainment system offers modern connectivity standards and embedded navigation. The seats are supportive and comfortable. Trunk space is average for the class at 310 liters, but Toyota showcases its cleverness in flexibility. Rear seats can be adjusted for legroom, and the backrests can be folded in a 40:20:40 ratio and adjusted in inclination. Furthermore, the compact SUV proves to be a versatile partner on off-road excursions. Transitions are smooth as the rear axle motor engages on rough terrain with rocky paths and deep ruts.
For residents of snowy regions or foresters interested in an electric compact car with AWD, the Urban Cruiser presents a viable option. However, this configuration comes with the highest equipment variant "Lounge," which starts at €42,990 in Germany.
Off-Road Comparison:
The electric Urban Cruiser AWD's dual-motor configuration and off-road features are more robust compared to most B-segment compact SUVs. Its hill descent control and Trail Mode grant it versatility for adventurous driving. Nevertheless, for those seeking a more traditional off-road experience or a vehicle not limited by battery life, alternative options may be worth considering.
The electric Toyota Urban Cruiser AWD, with its dual-motor configuration and robust off-road features, is more ‘suited for unpaved paths’ compared to other compact SUVs in the market. Its hill descent control and Trail Mode prove that it's not just exclusive to the urban ‘lifestyle', but it can handle a 'technology-driven' off-road adventure as well, should the occasion arise.
In terms of electric vehicles, Toyota's Urban Cruiser AWD stands out as a 'principal means of transport' for those who desire both city driving and occasional off-road adventures, catering to the needs of those with a 'diverse lifestyle' and 'modern tastes'.
