TSMC Launches EUV Energy-Saving Program to Cut Power Consumption by 24%
TSMC, the world's leading semiconductor foundry, has initiated a significant energy-saving program. The EUV Dynamic Energy Saving Program aims to reduce power consumption and meet sustainability goals. This news comes as TSMC accounts for approximately 9% of Taiwan's total power consumption.
TSMC's EUV Dynamic Energy Saving Program is set to bring substantial savings. By 2030, it is projected to yield 190 million kilowatt-hours in electricity savings and cut carbon emissions by 101 kilotons. The program, launched in mid-2024, has already reduced power consumption of EUV litho systems by 24%.
The program is being rolled out at TSMC's Fabs 15B, 18A, and 18B, with full deployment expected by the end of 2025. Enhancements in fab-level automation have reduced peak power draw of EUV tools by 44%, enabling more efficient operation without compromising output, quality, or yields. ASML, a key supplier, plans to equip all its EUV lithography machines worldwide with the energy-saving program by the end of the year.
The EUV Dynamic Energy Saving Program is expected to save TSMC $22.44 million by 2030 at an NT$3.78 per kWh rate. This initiative underscores TSMC's commitment to sustainability, given that only 46.1% of its power consumption comes from its actual fab tools, with around 53.9% consumed by various supporting systems.
