UK Launches Nature Towns and Cities Mission to Green Cities by 2035
A new cross-party mission, Nature Towns and Cities, has launched with the aim of bringing nature to towns and cities across the UK over the next decade. The program, a coalition of organisations including Natural England, National Trust, and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, aims to enhance public access to nature, restore historical landscapes, and improve natural habitats. It will be supported in Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland through respective environmental agencies.
The Nature Towns and Cities program aims to mobilize £1 billion of investment into greening towns and cities by 2035. This will be achieved through various sources, with The National Lottery Heritage Fund already committing £15.5 million to help 40 towns and cities better plan their urban nature recovery. The program also plans to create and improve over 100 new and revamped parks in urban areas across the UK through the Levelling Up Parks Fund.
Birmingham has been declared the UK's first official Nature City, with Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole named the first Nature Towns. The program aims to help at least 100 places across the UK become greener, healthier, and happier, benefiting at least five million people and one million children. The initiative seeks to connect people and communities to their natural environment, improving mental and physical wellbeing, and mitigating climate change impacts.
The Nature Towns and Cities program, supported in Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, is set to transform urban landscapes across the UK. With significant investment and a clear vision, the coalition aims to create greener, healthier, and happier places for millions of people, while also combating climate change.
