South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu is witnessing an underground cable installation project, with a whopping 300% expansion from a 500-meter stretch that was completed in the past week. Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia announced this via a Facebook post on Saturday, May 3.

The project, started by City Ordinance 2750 in March, aims to bring utilities, power, television, and telecommunications cables below the city's jurisdiction.

The pilot project started in two locations: SRP and the heritage district. At SRP, the work has begun at two corners, targeting a 22-kilometer stretch.

In the heritage district, cables will be laid beneath the ground around Plaza Sugbu, City Hall, and the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño. The downtown area is prioritized because of the need to eliminate overhead wires.

City Councilor Jerry Guardo, chairperson of the infrastructure committee, suggests that installing the cables in the heritage district may face permit-related problems.

The pilot project started on March 3 and is expected to be completed by April, stated Neil Bongon, director at Fibernet Konstrukt Corp., the project contractor.

Guardo, who will finish serving as councilor as of now, said that he would hand over the project to Councilor Edgardo Labella II, chairperson of the committee on Information, Communications, and Technology, at the end of his term.

Going Forward

The pilot initiative is designed to test the concept. If successful, the project will extend to other significant areas in Cebu, including Natalio Bacalso Avenue, Osmeña Boulevard up to Talamban, and P. del Rosario St. up to M.J. Cuenco Avenue in Mabolo.

Historical and Regulatory Considerations

When working on projects in heritage districts, obtaining specific permits, adhering to strict guidelines, and working closely with local preservation authorities are crucial to ensure the historical and architectural integrity of the area remains intact. This often means developing a detailed plan that addresses potential environmental and aesthetic impacts, engaging with local preservation groups, and securing all necessary permits before starting any construction work.

The Underground Cable Project at South Road Properties (SRP), Cebu, extends beyond just utilities, also targeting power, television, and telecommunications cables, showing the widespread application of technology. As the project expands, it will likely face regulatory considerations, especially when working in heritage districts, to preserve the historical and architectural integrity of these areas.
